So I’ve been playing with a reusable block approach to formatting for a book review. But I always have to convert it back to regular blocks before I start editing, so I thought, “Why not try the block pattern option?”

I created a blank block and converted to pattern with header, image block (empty), paragraph, header, paragraph, header, paragraph, etc. I think I screwed up in there as I used a non-standard block from somewhere else though…it works just fine in Reusable, not so much with the patterns. No worries, deleted the other type of block. Recreated the pattern, all good. Or so I thought.

When I finished with the post, (editing an old one), I said “preview”. It showed me the empty content. A little weird, but okay, maybe it’s not getting through as a real update. Publish. Says okay. I click on PREVIEW and it shows me the empty format; if I click on VIEW, it says the post doesn’t even exist? Weird.

Go to the front end of the site, go to the actual post list, there it is, with all content showing. Click on it, it says the page doesn’t exist. WTH? So it somehow messes with the page permalink or the post type or something. The URL looked fine, but it wasn’t functional. I eventually had to completely delete the post and recreate it completely from scratch, using the old reusable block method.

Still useful having the option on the sidebar, although I can do that with a admin menu editor too. I was hoping the patterns would work, but it doesn’t quite seem it’s ready for primetime yet? Or not after the latest update?

Oh, and at first I thought it was some sort of weird caching issue, except I have it turned off on the site at the moment AND I flushed my cache. I also tried mobile and the page wouldn’t load. I finally deleted it from active and trash to get rid of it. With patterns “attached” it somehow stayed sticky to the format.
