Someone is posting anonymously – how to stop?

  • On my site a spammer has started posting anonymously. As far as I can tell, wordpress doesn’t normally allow this. I’ve checked and there are no users set up as ‘blank’ usernames – any ideas how this could be happening?

    I also receive spam from legitimate users sometimes, could their accounts have been hacked in some way?

    I’ve installed Akismet and Bad Behaviour, but neither of these seem to be stopping the spam.

    Any advice greatly appreciated. I’ve deleted the spam temporarily but if it would be helpful for me to put it back up, let me know.

    Publishing posts, sorry.

    What default role have you set up for new users in Settings->General?

    The default role is ‘Author’, as I want people to create posts, albeit not anonymously!

    Have you check the wp_users table in your database? Does it match up to your list of Users in the Admin area?

    I’ve checked and there are no rogue users in the wp_users table. I’m also concerned by the fact that often legitimate users are posting spam.

    The posts almost always refer to “business loans”. Is there any way to blacklist this from appearing in posts as you can do with comments?
