Some Question, please look inside

1. you can try to change mail sending method under Events > Settings > Emails > Email Settings > Mail Sending Method eg. try SMTP then your gmail account to rule out any mail server issue.

2. not possible at the moment for the free version but already been available for EMpro which is an official premium addon to EM (free).

Any SMTP should work ok, but GMail is good for testing because you know if already working.
