I don’t understand why some images are displayed normally while the others are stretched out. I have the original ones of the same size but the plugin transforms some of them to 120×120 for some reason and doesn’t transform the other ones. I can’t see the logic why it happens. You can see other examples clicking to games here https://strategycon.ru/gamebase/. Related images are randomly stretched and not stretched.

Hmmm ya I’ll try to take a look into that…

Aha @arskrigitsioniets, I think I see the issue.

YARPP uses thumbnails of size 120px x 120px, which isn’t always available; if it isn’t, it uses the site’s default image and just resizes it.

Eg on https://strategycon.ru/warsworn-dragon-of-japan/, the thumbnail for “Fields of Glory: Empires” has a 120×120 thumbnail,

    but “Total Tank Simulator” doesn’t.

“Fields of Glory: Empires” thumbnail image is 120×120 but its getting stretched to 230×120 (yuck); whereas “Total Tank Simulator” is using the original image (which was closer to the size you wanted, although unnecessarily big.)

Of course, you really want wider thumbnails 230×120 anyways, as that’s what your CSS is stretching the images to. Have you tried following the suggestion from the FAQ on resizing YARPP’s thumbnail images? It looks like you should register a thumbnail image that’s 230×120, then use the Regenerate Thumbnails plugin to make sure you have the correct thumbnail sizes setup. Then you should be free from those ugly stretched thumbnails.

Let me know hot it goes!

Thanks, it looks that it’s working.

I wonder, why some images had the 150×150 thumbnails and some didn’t?

I wonder, why some images had the 150×150 thumbnails and some didn’t?

I think images that were uploaded **before** YARPP was installed didn’t have the 150×150 thumbnail (because when WordPress created the thumbnails, it didn’t know you’d need a 150×150 thumbnail).

Anyways, glad it’s sorted out. But sorry for the lost time figuring it out. Improving thumbnails is one of our priorities for the coming months.

Question if you have time: do you prefer the square thumbnails, or rectangular ones (landscape orientation)?

The majority of themes have rectangular previews of posts, so the rectangular thumbnails fit better to general style of the majority of themes, I think. Also, popular sites like twitter, facebook, youtube, they all use the rectangular format in any posts and people are used to it.

Great, thanks for your input and rationale. I’ll try to update this thread once we have something ready to try.
    Take care!
