• Upgraded to version 2.5 recently – mostly no problems, which is good. However, one element that seemed to be flogged pretty hard was the “customizable dashboard,” which sounded cool.

It sounded even better when I wanted to put something showing the last few posts into the Dashboard (if I need to edit a post, I liked just being able to click on the post title and jump right in to the editor; the new dashboard doesn’t have that, far as I can tell).

However, cool as a custom dashboard sounded, I can’t seem to find any way to actually change the Dashboard. Am I missing something obvious?

  • I don’t know if you can customize it even more than this, but I’ve noticed little “edit” links in each of the main sections of the dashboard. If you click them, you can edit the display settings and the feed that’s shown.

Try this plugin, if you want to really customize the main dashboard layout.

Scottorama, thanks. I messed with those a bit. Otto42, I’ll give that a shot sometime. I really don’t want to mess with the dashboard much – just want the most recent 5 posts with a little “Edit” link next to ’em. Like it used to be.

Given that a third-party plugin seems to be needed to do this stuff, the WP devs are apparently working with a definition of “customizable dashboard” that is somewhat at variance to mine.

Well, there’s no easy way to get the most recent posts on there, but wait a while. The dashboard is widgetized, it’s possible to write widgets for it now. Might take some time for widgets to do what you want to get written.

WordPress generally prefers the plugin route. The core is trying to be lean and mean, leaving the edge cases to plugins.

I’ve found that it’s not that hard to get a list of the recent posts (you can just redirect the WP Development Blog widget, for instance, to point do your own blog feed). The one little thing I miss is that “edit” link next to the recent post, so I can jump in to the editor.

It really comes down to the workflow to which I’ve become accustomed – it makes editing a recent post a 2-click (plus some scrolling) affair, rather than one. A minor inconvenience, to be sure.

In Matt’s blog post about WP 2.5, he talks about “dashboard widgets”:

it would be nice to get the ‘scheduled entries’ section back on the dashboard. i take it, until someone writes a widget for it, this will be unavailable right?
