Social Media Won't Work in Widgets: Tempera

I’d like to use my own social media icons, (as I’ve done for years) by placing either the html (eg: socialfollow) or the plugin widget (eg: addthis) into the Tempera widget spots. When I place it there, it appears on the site, but doesn’t work. (It DOES work in other places, so I know the code is not broken.) Please help! I like this template but am seriously considering switching if this can’t be resolved!
