Social Icons not displaying the correct web address

I have a big problem with my wordpress site.

I got a theme which had built in social icons ready to go and sections where to enter the web addresses of the social icons inside the theme options.

everything was running smoothly until today when i noticed that the web addresses of the social icons no longer display the correct web address i.e. for facebook or twitter in the form https://www.facebook.com/myusername or https://www.twitter.com/myusername

NOW for some reason it is showing it as https://www.mysite.com/www.facebook.com/myusername and https://www.mysite.com/www.twitter.com/myusername

i know it was one of my plugins that was messing it up namely the mutiple search selection widget as prior to deleting the search page the icons used to say https://www.mysite.com/search-categories/www.facebook.com/myusername

it has royally messed up my icons now and even though i have deleted the plugin nothing has changed.

what has happened? where can i fix this? as it is not a theme problem.

the plugin has changed something in the code i think
