Clear UI, good optimsiation but bulk optimiser underestimates media library size
-
Makes it nice and clear on how to optimise images and the level of optimising that will take place. Also great that it keeps the original sized image (MAKE SURE YOU CHECK THE BACKUP OPTION) so you can always revert back to it if you need to. In their example showing ‘normal’, ‘aggressive’ and ‘ultra’ optimisation I can’t see any visible difference between the three so that made me slightly skeptical. However I use the ‘Aggressive’ setting which nicely reduces file size by about 40%
[EDIT] Before doing any ‘bulk optimisation’ check that
- all of your images have been resized correctly first
- you are not resizing images you could simply be deleting out
- that they are JPGs/GIFs.
Once I’d kicked off the ‘bulk optimisation’ process I realised that some of my JPGs were still the original 4000 x 3000 size and not my preferred, smaller size of 1024 x 768. Also I’d saved some files as PNG by mistake which are naturally a lot bigger than JPGs. If you do these checks first then you are optimising smaller files in the first place.
I too found that their optimisation tool underestimated the size of my image library. It reckoned it was 473 MB in size so I used the 500 MB ‘one-off’ option. However I ran out of the 500 MB with a few dozen images remaining which was annoying. Rather than pay out again I’m going to wait for my free ’25MB a month’ to reset instead. Hence why I’ve changed this review from 5 to 4 stars.
