    I have some images on my site which I know are too big, like over 3mb. I could resize them on my computer and then upload them, but easier to use Smush on the images already in the media folder in WordPress. So I did, but the display image in the Lightbox display is still 3.5mb. So I made a new version on my computer which was smaller and uploaded that to the site instead. Now it’s smaller, but why didn’t Smush fix that on the original big image? I thought that was the idea.

    Hi @robotboy44,

    Free version of Smush has a limit for image size and can only optimize images under 1MB.
    If you have a lot of large images that you need to optimize I would suggest checking out the Pro version as the limited there is increased to 32MB and we offer 30 days free trial during which all pro options are unlocked.

    Cheers,

    Oh my gosh, for an app meant to resize large images, why on earth would you not indicate this really important fact?

    @robotboy44,

    Resize and compress are two different things. You can resize any image without limits. For example a 9000×9000 px can be resized to a 1800×1800 px image, which will result in a smaller file size. But compression is allowed only for files that are under 1Mb in size. For example, a 1800×1800 px image that is 1Mb in size can be compressed to 300kb.

    Also the limit is written in the plugin description:

    Unlimited & Free – Optimize all of your images up to 1MB in size forever (no daily, monthly, or annual caps)

    When I think of “optimize” I think of resize and compress, but I guess you see them as two different things. So will the free version resize a 9000×9000 image? Once it is smaller, will it then compress that smaller version? I’m a little confused about how this works, I guess.

    Thank you for your help.

    @robotboy44,

    Resize = change image dimensions (for example, 9000×9000 to 2000×2000)
    Compress = change image file size while preserving image quality (for example, 1Mb to 300kb)

    The free version has no limits on resize. Smush option “Resize my full size images” will allow you to resize a 9000×9000 image which will results in a smaller image with a reduced file size (absolutely no limits). But, the resulting image can also be compressed.

    Let’s say you resized to 2000x2000px. That would mean that WordPress created a bunch of different thumbnails, you’d have 2000x2000px as the original, a large image will be 1024×1024, medium 300×300, thumbnail 150×150 + all the other image sizes that are registered by your theme. Smush will compress all these images sizes for you. But the file size has to be under 1Mb (that’s the only limit). In the above example, if the original is 1.5Mb, Smush will skip it, if the large attachment is 1Mb, Smush will compress it.

    In the majority of cases, sites don’t use original images, but rather use various image sizes that are registered by the theme. So most image sizes will be compressed, regardless of the original image size.

    I hope that clears up a bit on what is limited by Smush.

    Best regards,
    Anton
