    My homepage had 29 http requests, 1.41MB in size, and loaded in 4-5 sec. GH Metrix analysis showed that the biggest problem in time load was the number of http requests. To reduce it, I installed and activated Smush. Although Smush says it compressed pictures, page size actually increased from 1.41MB to 3.35MB, number of http requests increased from 29 to 262 (!), and loading increased to 19 sec! After deactivating Smush, loading time went down to 10 sec (but still twice as long as before installing/activating Smush). Page size and http requests remained at 3.35MB/260+ http requests. Anyone can help undo Smush damages?! It would be much appreciated! Thanks!
    Cheers, Michael.

  • Hi @b2sg,

    Wow. That shouldn’t happen. Could you please post two reports from GTmetrix, so I can compare and figure out the issue?

    Best regards,

    Hi Anton, thank you for your reply! I don’t have the report before Smush activation anymore. To get a report of how things look now (after activation and deactivation of Smuch), you may just run ces.b2sg.org through https://gtmetrix.com/ and you’ll have the current report. Prior to smush, pretty much everything ranked good (mostly a score of A/100%, with a couple of Bs at 89-94%) on GTmetrix, except for the number of http requests (score F/32%). Thank you for trying to help!

    Cheers, Michael

    @b2sg,

    I can see that the majority of the requests are from YouTube. Smush doesn’t touch YouTube videos. So maybe you changed some setting in the theme? Unfortunately, it’s really hard to say what happened without seeing what was there initially.

    Best regards,
    Anton

    Hi Anton,
    Thank you again for your reply. No change in the settings. The YT videos were there and the page generated 29 https request. Smush got activated, http requests jumped immediately as a consequence to Smush activation to 262. That’s the exact sequence of events.
    I just run GTmetrix on https://ces.b2sg.org/ces-meetings which has no YT video (in fact a simple page with text). It now shows 53 http requests (instead of 8) and a loading time of 10.6 sec (instead of just under 2 sec).
    I don’t know what Smush did, but it screwed up the website in a very big way. And whatever it did is irreversible: inactivating Smush doesn’t fix the problem it generated.
    Best, Michael

    @b2sg,

    The report looks fine, I do not see any issues. You have 6 images, 6 fonts – that’s 12 requests. WordPress in its bare state uses at least 8 requests. Almost each plugin uses 2 or more assets (ImageMapper, Charitable, LayerSlider, Revolution Slider, The Events Calendar, etc). That’s over 30 requests just right there. Also each plugin will pull in WordPress dependencies. You’re not seeing a difference when disabling Smush – is because Smush is not the cause of this. If you disable all the plugins, you will get back to 15-20 requests.

    You can check out the report, and there is not a single request that is from Smush:

    Best regards,
    Anton
