Smush doesn’t do its work!!!
-
Hi,
I’m using Smush free version plugin but, analysing the speed of my site, it results that the images are too heavy and slow down my site. So I’m thinking that Smush doesn’t work. Can you help me?
Maybe I have to set differently the plugin’s settings.
Thanks in advance
Best regards

Hello @thebigbang ,
I’m sorry to hear about that.
Can you share the site URL so we could check it? Or maybe the exact message in the page speed results, this way we could advise better.
kind regards,
KasiaHi Kasia,
thanks for the answer. The message in the page speed said to publish images in more recente image format and suggests to use some plugins to convert automatically the images in optimal formats. Smush is one of these suggested plugins. So I would understand: is Smush working? I’m using the free version.
This problem with the images slow down my site very much.
Thanks in advance.
Best regardsHello @thebigbang
I hope you are doing well!
I’ve tested Smush plugin on my site and it is working well, optimizing images. Please share here a link to your site so we could check the performance report and have an idea of what is going on with your site.
In which format images are loading on your site? What Performance Tool you’re using to test the site’s performance?
Please advise
Kind regards,
NastiaHi,
I used Page Speed Insight (and also other free tools). I use images from Internet and usually I use jpg or png. My site is homosum.it.
There is a way to contact you by email so eventually I can send you some screenshots, and you can control if the settings of Smush are well sat?
Thanks in advanceHi @thebigbang
I hope you’re well today!
I tried to test the site with Google PageSpeed but I’m getting error report only, stating that the site couldn’t be reached (even though I can visit it). I suppose it’s a temporary issue on Google end but for now, I couldn’t check it.
But I run it through GTMetrix and I can see it also reports multiple images on site suggesting “loseless” compression so that might confirm that the images weren’t actually optimized or not fully optimized.
Before we move any further with this, I’d like to ask you to check one more thing. Could you please:
– go to “Smush -> Dashboard” page in your site’s back-end
– in “Settings” there in “Image Sizes” make sure that either “All” option is selected or if “Custom” is selected then all the checkboxes are checked
– below that make sure that “Automatic compression” is enabled– then “save settings”, scroll the page up and run “re-check images’ option
After that, see if it says that all images are smushed or if it says that “you have X attachments that need smushing”. If it says there are attachments that need smushing, click on “Bulk Smush Now” button and wait until the process completes.
If there are any errors displayed during the process, please note them down and let me know about them here.
If there are no errors and process finishes then see if it says that all attachments are already smushed. If there are any left, run “Bulk smush now” over again until it says that all attachmets are smushed.
After that, if there’s any cache on site, clear it and check the site again to see if the images are still reported by PageSpeed/Gtmetrix.
Best regards,
AdamHi Adam,
thanks for the answer.
I’ve done what you suggested. I went in Dashboard > Smush. Here Setting page displays and at the item “Image Sizes” is sat “All”, in “Automatic compression” is sat ON.
On the contrary, the items “Metadata” and “Image Resizing” are sat OFF.There is a window, named Bulk Smush, where there is written: “Bulk smush detects images that can be optimized and allows you to compress them in bulk”. and also “All attachments have been smushed. Awesome!”.
At the top of the window there are also two notices:
-“Image Resize Savings: Save a ton of space by not storing over-sized images on your server. Enable image resizingBest regards”
– “Directory Smush Savings: Smush images that aren’t located in your uploads folder. Choose directory”.
Wha do I have to do?I think it could be easier if I communicate with you with email, because I could send you some screenshot. Anyway, I wait your advice.
Best regards ??Hello there @thebigbang
You can use a tool like Monosnap and share screenshot links here, or upload your screenshots in a service like Dropbox or Google Drive and share the link with us.
It seems that your settings are correct. I might also enabling the Meta data strip, unless there’s camera information that you want to preserve.
About the loading speed of the site, I don’t experience such a slow website, I did notice that a great amount of resources are about the sharing/like buttons in each article. This is something around 20Mb of the total 50Mb of page load, so I’d rather advise to think about these button, especially on the homepage.
Warm regards,
DimitrisHello there @thebigbang
