• I have tried everything I can think of to get any kind of mail working from my WordPress installation.

    Here’s my setup:

Hardware: Dell desktop running Windows 7 Enterprise
    Connectivity: Fairpoint DSL 3000/784Mbs
    DynDNS host name tortui.net
Attempting to configure gmail.smtp.com as my relay host. I have gmail.smtp.com configured in Thunderbird on this box and have no problem sending or receiving gmail. I’ve tried to solve this problem using several different plugins and everything has failed. I am now trying to configure with the XpertMailer plugin. As usual all attempts have failed!

    These are my XpertMailer settings:

    XPertMailer Options
    Loading …

    ( ? ) Mail delivery:
    HostName/IP: Require Authentication ? Yes
    UserName:[email protected] Password:****** Method: Detect
Port: 465 TimeOut: 10 Name: localhost SSL: TLS

( ? ) If mail delivery has failed, send mail to MX Zone ? No

    ( ? ) Log XPertMailer errors ? File: php.log

It seems like I should have something official for Name. I’ve tried tortui.net my domain name.

I have set up mercury mail in the past and managed to get messages sent to a local account but other smtp servers wouldn’t accept mail from my machine since I am using a dynamic IP.

I hope someone can please help. I’ve tried off and on to get this to work for over a year!

    Esmi,

Very interesting! I’m reading careful but I’m not hopeful because, you see, I’m my own hosting service. Hopefully I can learn something nonetheless.

    Thank you!

Gmail requires secure SMTP connection (SSL) to send mail. Is there any such option available to enable secure connection (SSL) in plugin configuration?

Yes both XpertMailer, Configure SMTP, and WP-Mail-SMTP plugins allow you to select SSL/TLS with your choice of a port. In my situation, there must be some other underlying problem. I think I will try re-installing from scratch!

Since they are now allowing me to add to this post, I would like to add the following information:

When I test my XpertMailer settings I get a wait symbol. I see waiting for tortui.net at the bottom left of my browser and under XpertMailer Options it says loading…

    Here’s a log message:

[Thu Aug 27 21:35:59 2009] [error] [client 127.0.0.1] PHP Fatal error: Maximum execution time of 60 seconds exceeded in C:\\server\\www\\tortui.net\\public_html\\wordpress\\wp-content\\plugins\\xpertmailer-advanced-php-mail-engine\\XPM4\\PHP5\\MAIL5.php on line 736, referer: https://tortui.net:8585/wordpress/wp-admin/options-general.php?page=xpertmailer-advanced-php-mail-engine/XPertMailer.php

From the error, it seems that there is a connection problem between your system and GMail server since it is taking more than 60 seconds. You can try to raise a limit for PHP execution but I think it will not help.

Also, if you have firewall installed on your system then make sure Gmail SMTP port is allowed for outbound connection.
