I’ve looked at php.ini and everything looks fine.

I can connect to other remote servers (eg. fetching RSS). Not sure where to look next.

Turns out, BlueHost blocks all outgoing SMTP requests, as do some other hosts.
Might be nice info to put in the FAQ.

    Hi,

I’m having the same issue and can’t get the host provider to fix it:

    1. Google Apps and account credentials are fine.
    2. Port 465 is open: https://www.alicka.com/tools.html (IP: 92.43.23.230)
    3. I added the SPF value: v=spf1 include:_spf.google.com ~all

    Any ideas? Thanks

Had the same problem, and it turned out to be an ipv6 issue. If I telnet into gmail (telnet smtp.gmail.com 25), it tries connecting to the ipv6 address, which does not work for some reason I haven’t figured out yet (i’m on Linux, CentOS 6, 64 bit). If I put the ip4 address in the settings, everything works just fine.

Pat, I had the same problem with Bluehost and through Google found this solution: https://aldrin.aquisap.info/2012/08/26/wp-mail-smtp-in-wordpress-hosted-by-bluehost/

    Worked perfectly for me
