SMTP connect() failed.

I used this plugin for more than a year and no problems at all. I upgraded to WordPress 4.7 and now I got everytime an error “SMTP connect() failed. https://github.com/PHPMailer/PHPMailer/wiki/Troubleshooting”.
I have no idea where to find the solution so maybe you can help what to check and where to look for the solution.
