SMTP authentication and PHPmail

Maybe I am just not getting something here.

My host already has phpmail running on the server. It is my understanding that WordPress is already setup to use that but users who register never receive their passwords.

My host tells me will need to use SMTP authentication to send email.

What exactly am I supposed to do here? This is slightly over my head.
