Small images are enlarged too much and blurry

I’m trying so hard to obtain some thumbnails (by categories) displayed in their full original size (they are max 250 ca width, or max 350 ca height), both in home page and archive pages.
I don’t understand which file to modify and how (with child-theme).The only images that are shown well enough are those (in other categories) whose originals are large enough (700-800px) to be scaled down, while the lower ones are enlarged too much to fill the columns: they would be too big anyway, but most of all they are blurry being enlarged double their size.
