Slow transfer via FTP – 150kB/s

    Hi all, great plugin, saved my life a few times. I wonder if anyone could help with this problem.

    I’m having issues with FTP transfer since I started using this plugin a few years ago; it always transfers slowly, appears capped around 150kB/s, so even small backups take hours. On web servers, I’m running:

    • multiple websites with different configurations
    • various hosting services from AWS (EC2, Ligthsail)
    • Apache or Nginx
    • PHP 7.4, 8.0 or 8.1
    • plugin is set to SSL-FTP with passive mode
    • Only ports 80 and 443 are open

    Backup destination is a self hosted server on a Synology machine and 250Mbit line, I can upload at over 20MB/s to it from a different location via Filezilla. Ports 55536-55551 opened (for passive mode) and port 21 is mapped to 60021.

    Are there any tweaks I should make, ports to open etc to improve speed?

    I never see this kind of issue before, but incase the upload getting slow on a single website, did you try FTP upload in another site for testing ?

    Hello,

    I’ve just tested this on a completely different backup target (FTP server), a VM hosted by Siteground, this time on port 21. Same results, backup from my main website took over 10000 seconds (just under 3h) for 1GB of data.

    At this point, the only things I haven’t changed are the FTP mode (passive, explicit SSL-FTP) and the provider (AWS), although I’ve tested different types of solutions from them (Lightsail, EC2, various LAMP / LEMP configurations etc).

    Of course the issue is still open, it’s definitely NOT RESOLVED.
