Slow website after update to WordPress 6.3

  • I updated the website to WordPress 6.3 version and the site dropped from 2-4 seconds average for backend and frontend loading time to 30-40 seconds.

    At first, I thought there was some problem with the plugins or settings, so I checked everything, tried optimizing even more the images, checked the custom code (which worked in the previous versions), the plugins, and the CDN, purged the whole cache, optimized the Database, and the PHP version, rolling it back from 8.2 to 8.0, but nothing.

    As soon as I downgraded to WordPress 6.2 immediately the website went back to loading both the backend and frontend in the usual average of 2-4 seconds.

    At the moment, I’m keeping the WP version at 6.2, but I’d like to update it soon to the latest version. If you need further information to understand better the problem and fix it, please let me know.

    Same problem with all my websites wp based.

    WordPress 6.3 incredibly slows down page loading even on very fast servers.
    Highly not recommended to upgrade to version 6.3.

    I installed 6.3.1 same problem. I had to downgrade WP again.
    I hope this problem will be fixed soon.

    the problem from version 6.3 exists, I will try to understand why and solve the problem. I think the cause of the slowdown depends on the wpml plugin. However your site, even with version 6.2, has a page loading time that is too high, the server response is not as it should be. You should consider moving your site to a better performing hosting provider. Italian hosting providers promise you high performance but in reality they provide limited resources on shared hosting plans.

    Same here. Not front end “SEO” b.s.
    In my case, it’s the block editor. Trying to edit an existing post, or even authoring anew. It’s ridiculously slow since 6.3. I’m considering resorting to copy/ paste the code to a desktop editor just to complete the composition. I feel like i’m on Win 98 with 2GB of memory (while on Win 11 w/ 32GB). It’s just too much. Monitor your CPU/ Memory (your browser has a task manager for that as well). Move the cursor in the block editor. You’ll see the spikes. Too much javascript striving for the magical. Tone it down a bit. 6.2 seemed pretty good.

    If the sluggish 6.3 is really driving you nuts, as it is me, you might try this sort of approach. Use a text editor capable of wrapping text with custom code. Works for me:

    We also have speed problems. However, not as extreme as described here.

    We have deactivated and reactivated all plugins on our site.

    The plugins Yoast and Astra Pro slow down the page by about 1.5 seconds each.

    I hope this helps to narrow down the error.

    Same here.

    Tribe’s Events Calendar Pro became much slower in the backend. When we try to create a new event, the form opened quite quickly but now it needs at least 10 seconds. When we create recurring events, the event list got updated in 30-60 seconds, depending on the complexity of the schedule. Now it takes 8h minimum, to create a recurring event, that takes place once every week.

    The problem exists exactly since I upgraded to 6.3. Today I tried 6.3.1 but it didn’t help.

    Please let me know if you need some debugging output or whatever might help.

    Thanks for your reply, I hope to hear good news soon.
    I was thinking about migrating to another hosting, but at the moment, I have to wait for the renewal because there are less than 15 days to go before the yearly subscription expires, and it seems it’s not possible to migrate in this timeframe (besides the fact that they asked me an exorbitant amount of money to do it).
    So, the hosting migration is already under consideration. However, take note that before I upgraded to WP 6.3.1, I had shorter page loading times. Then I upgraded to WP 6.3.1 and was asked to upgrade the database, and when I went back to WP 6.2.2, the times were higher than before, so I am waiting to see if that is the problem.

    Once I solve the loading time issues with the new version of WP 6.3.x, I can figure out what to do about hosting, which I want it to be in Italy for EU GDPR purposes anyway.

    as I wrote to you I think the problem is caused by the wpml plugin, but I’m not sure yet…

    If you can pinpoint your problems to certain plugins, you could look at your PHP error log. Quite a few plugins don’t have support for PHP 8.x yet.

    You can install the Health Check & Troubleshooting plugin, which has a PHP compatibility checker for plugins.

    Try installing new versions and see if they solve your problem.
