Slow First Page Load

Any time W3 is enabled, the first time I request a new page, the response time is incredibly slow (around 5 seconds). Downloading assets after the first response is quick, and requesting pages that are already in the cache is very quick. I have disk-enhanced page cache, APC object cache, and browser caching enabled. Gradually disabling features in W3 gives me the same result, where disabling the plugin corrects the issue (all pages respond back and load under 2 seconds). Hoping there’s a configuration I am missing that will correct this – any help is much appreciated.
