Slow down even with caches disabled

I am in the process of moving my wordpress site to another server. It is currently running on a shared hosting and now the new one is a dedicated virtual machine on a cloud setup.
The moment I copied everything I noticed that on the new (more expensive) server, the site was running much slower (like 5 seconds slower for the index page). One of the contributors to this seems to be this plugin. I deactivated it and I immediately gained 2 seconds. Even with all caching disabled, the site is still much slower with this plugin enabled.
I have used this plugin successfully for over a year now on the shared hosting. What could be the reason of this degradation on the new server?
