    Seems to have solved itself. De-activated all plugins, then re-activated them one by one. It didn’t help me pinpoint the problem, but it did make the problem go away. Mysteriously, with all plugins re-activated, the problem is gone.

    Pinned this down. Shortcodes Ultimate slider does not play nice with Jetpack Gravatar Hovercards.
