Skip_post_thumb

This is the key. The value can be any, since the plugin checks for the presence of this meta field.

I put it as both the key and value, yet it doesn’t seem to work. I deleted all the featured images, and when I reloaded the page with skip_post_thumb, it still set the first image as the featured image.
What am I doing wrong?

Yes

Make sure that you have disabled the Automatic generation option when saving a post.
