Sitemap.xml error

both sitemap.xml and sitemapindex.xml used to work just fine, and without notice, all of the sitemap.xml files are no longer accessible. im pretty sure we didnt change or update anything, but i have about 400 sites on a multisite with broken sitemaps at the moment.
