Sitemaps – does the plugin ping search engines automatically?

Does the plugin automatically ping search engines (specifically Google) when the sitemap has been updated? How frequently does it do so and is cron used?
I have searched through the plugin settings and documentation but have been unable to find the answer. It appears older versions did have a setting for pinging search engines that has since been removed, so it seems very unclear as to how the plugin currently operates in this regard.
