On Google search console I get the message “Sitemap couldn’t fetch”.
Most of my website pages are not indexed and the ones that are show that they have no sitemap.
When pressing on the Couldn’t Fetch message I get: Sitemap could not be read, General HTTP error.
The sitemap on https://insanity.expatika.org/sitemap_index.xml is showing very well, and still this is the message I’m receiving.
I approached google and they said that something is blocking their bots on my site.
    I cannot figure this out.
    Thanks for your help,
    Taly

    Hi @talygo

We’re checking https://insanity.expatika.org/sitemap_index.xml and we do see it is loading as expected, as well as the sub-sitemaps. However, there isn’t any valid content for the https://insanity.expatika.org/e-landing-page-sitemap.xml. You may want to check if you have any e-landing-pages that you want to display, otherwise you can customize the sitemap to have it ‘not show in the results’ so it will have a ‘noindex’ tag and that particular sitemap won’t appear – https://yoast.com/help/how-to-customize-the-sitemap-index/

We’re checking your robots.txt file (https://insanity.expatika.org/robots.txt) and we don’t see any directives that would block Google or the other crawlers/spiders from accessing your site and sitemap.

Would it be possible for you to try and remove all sitemaps and then resubmit the /sitemap_index.xml and monitor it for changes in the upcoming days? You can follow the steps here – https://yoast.com/help/submit-sitemap-search-engines/#google-remove

    Thank you Michael Tina
    1. As per your suggestion I updated my site-map to not include a landing page.
    2. I already tried in the past to remove and re-submit the sitemap, but to follow on your suggestion I retried it. Although the site map is showing when pressing “open sitemap” it still shows “Couldn’t fetch” and a “General HTTP error”.

Would appreciate if you have more suggestions for solving this error.

    Thanks a lot,

    Taly

    Thanks for following up, Taly.

If resubmitting the sitemap does not resolve the warning, it may be due to a bug or issue in Google Search Console.

We would then recommend checking the sitemap in Google Search Console using the URL Inspection Tool.

To check whether the sitemap can be fetched using the URL Inspection Tool in Google Search Console you would need to perform the following steps:

? Click on ‘URL Inspection’ in the left hand menu
? Enter the URL of your sitemap in the entry field
? Since the sitemap is intentionally set to ‘noindex’, the page will not be in ? Google’s index.
? Click the ‘Test Live URL’ button
? After the Live Test is complete, check the ‘Page Fetch’ status which is located under ‘Crawl’

We also have a guide on using the URL Inspection Tool feature here: https://kb.yoast.com/kb/fetch-as-googlebot/

    I’m sorry, I didn’t see the reply!
Did what you instructed and the result under fetch is still N/A…
    Thanks
