Hi Rolf, sitemap is working great (as it has been for many years – thanks!) but is throwing about four errors daily and wondered if you had any idea what it could be?:

PHP Warning: Illegal offset type in isset or empty in [snip]/wp-content/plugins/xml-sitemap-feed/controllers/class.xmlsf-sitemap.php on line 303

  • Hi, thanks for reporting ??

This warning seems to occur when a non-existant sitemap is request. It should not hinder any normal indexing or user experience but it will be addressed in the next release!

Cheers Rolf. I can see it’s nothing to be concerned about then and thanks for all your work! Just curious – are the requests for sitemaps being generated by mis-configured webcrawlers or is it part of the whole of web scanning that bad actors conduct continually?

It can be both actually… After switching the “Split by” options, or disabling a sitemap type that you had active before, spiders may continue revisiting the old URLs for a while. Or indeed bots that are just trying out anything.
