@saveatrain As much as we hate to say it, your question goes beyond the scope of the technical support me and my colleagues on the Yoast support team are able to provide through the forums. Unfortunately we can’t offer support related to database modifications. Since we don’t want to take the risk that we break your website by suggesting incorrect or incomplete code, we cannot advise you on these types of modifications. Maybe someone watching these forums can assist you further, but if your topic is inactive for 7 days, we’ll mark it as resolved to keep the overview.

    Thank you for your understanding.

i toggled off the xml and now
    https://educatetravel.com/sitemap_index.xml
    is not showing anything

I tried to toggle it back, and it said successful

    but https://educatetravel.com/sitemap_index.xml

    is still 404

can it be that it takes time to recreate it?

Yoast SEO generates the sitemap on the fly. So, there’s no delay. If the sitemap index note showing a 404 error page, you might considering update the permalinks structure of your site without changing to see whether this resolves the issue for you.
