Hi there. I have been using AIO SEO for many years. On my current website, I have 3 sitemaps as follows.
    /page-sitemap.xml
    /post-sitemap.xml
    /sitemap.xml

The first two on the list are not working, at least according to Google Search Console. I am getting a message that says “couldn’t fetch”. Has there been an update to the plugin that is causing this? I have had those three sitemaps for about 6 months with no issues.

Also, I think this might be related to the drop in “Indexed, not submitted in sitemap” per GSC that I am seeing. I am not sure where to start with this. Any suggestions? Her is a link to screenshots from GSC if that helps.

    Thanks!
    Steve

Hi @skmorrow, there’s nothing in our plugin that would cause this. If Google can fetch the main sitemap then they should be able to fetch the others.

Please provide the URL for your sitemap so we can check it.

    Here are the links

    https://paddleabout.com/post-sitemap.xml
    https://paddleabout.com/sitemap.xml

The first two won’t fetch and the last one is successful.

I also notice when I open the sitemap in WordPress that it doesn’t show the page and post sitemaps anymore. It used to though. I had someone else help me set up my sitemaps about 6 months ago, and I don’t know why we submitted three sitemaps as we did. Normally I only use the last one on the list, not the post and page versions too.

Here is a link to an image of how my sitemap is configured in WP.

I am wondering if I can delete those sitemaps that won’t fetch and if that will impact my rankings or break anything. But I don’t know if I also need to configure the plugin differently.

    Thanks

@skmorrow So the reason they don’t exist and Google catch fetch them is because at some point you disabled the Sitemap Indexes setting. That’s perfectly fine, your sitemap is so small you don’t need Sitemap Indexes.

So all you need to do is remove those two sitemaps from Google Search Console and you’re all good to go.

Strange, I have had it set up this way for about 6 months, why is GSC just now not able to fetch these?

I couldn’t answer that, it could be they’re just slow in updating that report.
