Hi. I’m encountering this error when trying to migrate from iPower to SG:

    SiteGround Migrator
Transfer cannot be initiated due to permissions error.
For the purposes of this transfer we need to create temporary files on your current hosting account. Please fix your files permissions at your current host and make sure your wp-content folder is writable. Files should be set to 644 and folders to 755.

I sent this to iPower support. They claim the error is with the plugin. Their reply:
“I have reset the file and folder permission. But still the plugin siteground is showing up error. It appears to be copying files from our server to remote server is not supported through the plugin.”

    Any ideas?

The error occurs after I’ve entered the migration token into the SG Migrator and hit initiate transfer. My wordpress and plugin installs are up to date.

    Thanks,
    Jon

  • I have just installed and tried this plugin for the first time too and have also got this exact same error. My host (TSOhost) have changed file permissions as instructed in the error message but the error persists. They also say they think problem must be with the plugin. I’d also be interested in hearing any ways to get around it!
    Thanks

The permissions error occurs in two cases:
    1. The plugin cannot create it’s temp directory where all encrypted archives are being saved
    2. The plugin cannot create and save an encrypted archive.

The first one can be easily check. Could you please check your wp-content/uploads folders and see if there is a folder with name similar to the following:
1536643523-7e13da2cec0c113c065bcdf1c65572e5f5b27be7. It should contain three folders /plugins, /themes and /sql.

If the temp directories exist, then the issue occurs when the plugin creates the archives.

If you see this error right after you have clicked on “Initiate transfer” button, I’m almost sure that the temp directories didn’t exist.

It appears to be copying files from our server to remote server is not supported through the plugin

This is not true, because, we are not copying files between servers, but we download encrypted copy of them.

My suggestion is to open a ticket in our system, and to provide as much details as possible.

Thanks, Stanimir. I’ve opened a ticket.

Also, I checked the FTP and you are correct in that those directories are not being created. Previous attempts to migrate last week did create those directories (the plugin would spin/fail later), but the most recent attempts are not creating the directories.

    Thanks,
    Jon

    Hey Jon,

If the temp directories are not being created, then this is permission issue.
You have to set your permissions to 755 for uploads folder, so that the plugin can create the temp directories.

    Cheers,
    Stanimir
