    Hi!

    I’m getting “Site-wide default: none” in all meta robots advanced fields in Yoast.

    Doesn’t this mean noindex + nofollow?

    In the source code I see only: <meta name=”robots” content=”noodp”/>

    What exactly does Site-wide default: none stand for and how to change it?

    None means don’t add any custom robots meta like noindex or nofollow.

    In most cases, this means you will see noodp because Yoast SEO automatically adds the noodp tag whenever you’ve set a meta description template or manually set a meta description on the item.

    Well in that case everything’s fine ??! Thank you for your reply.

    Yoast guide (https://yoast.com/robots-meta-tags/) got me thinking otherwise and caused me a headache ??:

    none

    This is a shortcut for noindex,nofollow, or basically saying to search engines: don’t do anything with this page at all.

    But “Site-wide default: none” means no special meta tags are inserted?

    I can see where that is confusing. How can we improve the wording? Please open an issue in our GitHub repository for Yoast SEO requesting the improvement. Thanks!

    I m very confused about this, Yoast guide says –

    none
    This is a shortcut for noindex,nofollow, or basically saying to search engines: DONT DO ANYTHING with this page at all.

    Whats the benefit of using robot meta tag in a page/post ?

    There are Two advance settings :
    Meta Robots Index and Meta Robots Advanced

    Now,
    if I use the default (Index) setting for “Meta Robots Index”, it adds no meta robot tag in page.
    if I set the “Meta Robots index” to noindex, then it adds a meta robot tag in my page, [Even if the Meta Robots Advanced setting below is set to “Sitewide Default:None”, as u said above it will add no meta robot tag ]

    I m confused about the uses of the both. What does “Meta Robots Index” setting do specifically and whats the benefit of using Meta Robots Advanced (using meta tag or not)?

    As far as Canonical url is concerned, I know that if a page is a duplicate of another page, only then it points to the main page/preferred version. But I can see that Yoast adds the canonical for each original page. How come each page has canonical rel tag ?

    How about you just explain what it is coz i am totally confused! Rather than just sending someone off to Github just explain it clearly and simply for all the people who end up here coz it ranks high in Google and that way you save everyone the trouble of having to create a new post and wait for an answer. It’s not that hard!

    Your guide is saying one thing and you another??? Which one is it?

    @scottlin74 The meta robots advanced section only applies to these three specific advanced robot options:

    * No Image Index
    * No Archive
    * No Snippet

    By selecting Site-wide default: None or None, you’re telling the plugin to not output those three specific advanced robot options.
