Site Visitors Able to Search Images by Tag

I think I might be missing something as documentation and forum chatter about this subject all seem to be a few years old, but is there anyway to let site visitors type a keyword (tag) into a search box and return a list of matches onto a page?

The reason this would make sense is that our client has an extensive and fairly complicated portfolio of work that they have done. They want to be able to tell a customer to go to their site and just search by a keyword (for example ‘kitchen’) and be able to bring up all relative content so they can see examples of our clients work, thus being more streamlined drilling down through menu after sub-menu.

Does this exist? Am I crazy???
