Site URL not working proparly after setup

Just setup my first multisite following setup instructions for config and htaccess files.

Setup automatically indicated that I must use sub-directories for my network. (not a problem)

The problem is that after the setup the site URL is the same as the home directory and if I use Domain name in a web browser the error is

#Error establishing a database connection#

VPS HOSTING SETTINGS
Domain name – mydomain.com
Document root – /httpdocs

VPS FILE STRUCTURE
httpdocs/wordpress/

[before installing the multisite I was running a single site where I used copies of the .htaccess and index.php files in the root directory

httpdocs/index.php
these two files allowed me to keep the wp files out of the root directory for this domain while redirecting to httpdocs/wordpress/]

After multisite setup everything works except if you type mydomain.com in browser. you can only get to my site if you type mydomain.com/wordpress .

looking at sites in network settings the siteurl and home are mydomain.com/wordpress

If I change siteurl in database or change document root in hosting settings, nothing works.

Any ideas on where I went wrong or how to possibly fix this problem.

After this issue Ill want to know why the new sites I create dont show in web browser but do show up in wp network settings.
