• These are the events of the self-destruction of my website https://www.essentiallycruising.com
    1. The site became sluggish and eventually barely moved at all.
    2. Following host suggestions, I deactivated plugins, attempted to optimize site and photos(photo optimization stalled) to no avail.
    2. Tried 2015 Theme
    3. Site suddenly appears as a brand new site – received email to set it up.
    4. Permissions mysteriously changed.
    5. Site is now a partial page with no pages and no access to past post – clicking results in a 404 not found message.

    I am running 4.1

I admit that reading the codex is like reading an advanced thermal dynamics text- just because I ready doesn’t mean that I comprehend it or am not terrified by it.

At this point, I need to know if this site can be revived or if I should simply start from scratch. I am concerned that it is haunted or has some other ghosts. I would like to retrieve the content from it if that is a possibility in the case that it can’t be revived.

Any thoughts or suggestions, other than becoming a WP/PHP/database expert, greatly appreciated.

  • Using ftp go to wp-content/themes/ and rename folder of that 2015 theme.
Btw. are you able to login to dashboard as admin?
Also I see you use some cache or optimizing plugin for minify …
It would be good to turn them off while you do some changes on website.

    Thanks, Peter.
Those cache plug-ins were suggested. I will turn them off and go re-name the 2015 folder. I was originally using Suffusion.
I can log into admin now via dashboard, but that function had also disappeared for awhile.

If you can log in, then just disable plugin, its not necessary to rename folder. I thoughts that you are not able to login there.
So first try disable cache, and change for default theme and will see if problems will still exist. If yes, keep it like that and disable plugins …
If trouble still exist, you can reinstall WordPress from Dashboard – update.
Also check if you don’t have two installation of WordPress in your directory (using ftp)

This is what is really odd. Every time that I log in, there are different plugins showing. Last time, there were about 5 of them, which I thought that I had deleted. Now, I have all of the original ones back.
Not sure why every time is different – and I have not done anything at all! I will go disable plugins again and see if that helps. Last time, it did nothing. I used one of those plugin monitors and everything seemed fine. I will follow, your suggestions, Peter. Maybe I do have two installations of WP- like I said, I suddenly got the email as if I were just installing a fresh WP – but this happened spontaneously.

I think it can be related to cache.
Disable that cache plugin, delete it, then even via ftp check wp-content/cache and delete whole folder. Also check .htaccess and config.php if there is set something with your cache plugin.
I just found 3 themes in use there … one is still cached.
Check it with ftp if there is not too many folders, if something ”special” there ??

Thanks so much Peter. Oddly enough, the plugins that I deactivated and deleted appeared again. I will ftp and delete the folder.

You can also try to contact your hosting provider, bc. you have it mixed nice ??
Now I see there fresh install of WP.

My host said it is beyond the service that they provide.
That is why I came here to find some alternatives.
What do you mean by my it being mixed nice?
I tried deleting the cache, but can’t get rid of minify – it says that the directory is not empty, but I see nothing there.
Thanks again Peter, I may just have to end up starting over from scratch, which I was trying to avoid.
