Try deactivating all plugins. If that resolves the issue, reactivate each one individually until you find the cause.

If that does not resolve the issue, try switching to the Default theme (WordPress 1.5 – 2.9.2) or the Twenty Ten theme (WordPress 3.0 and higher) to rule-out a theme-specific issue.

You;re getting a “not found” which is technically different than a blank white page (that;s a php error).

this requires mod_rewrite and htaccess files in working order.

Also, I went back to the top level. It has html files and trying to access index.php gives “no input file specified’.

In a network, every single subsite also runs through and uses the main files.

So – tell me what you did that wasn’t part of the install instructions. ??

Apart from the fact that this is 7 months old, I came across this page when I had the same problem.

What I noticed was that the owner of the site had decided that they didn’t want then twenty-ten theme, and seeing as that was the default theme, the blogs defaulted to using no theme at all, hence why I got a white screen – because there were no files for it to read.

To fix this, just go to Appearances and activate a theme for the blog. A long term fix would be to re-upload twenty-ten to the themes directory, even if you don’t actually use it anywhere.

A white page is a php error. in your case, you found it easy, but that won’t be the same reason in all cases of a white screen. ??
