• Hi there, I have a fairly large website which was performing well on a shared server until the PHP version was upgraded from 5.6 to 7.2. Since then, the site has been loading really slowly, particularly in the WordPress admin areas. When reverted back to PHP 5.6 it was fine.

It times out frequently (504 Bad Gateway) despite having a very light theme (Studiopress Genesis), all plugins (of which there are few) all updated.

I have moved server to a VPS server which is costing over £180GBP per month an it is still slow. What could this be?

  • Did you try contacting your hosting provider? I had a script compatibility issue when I upgraded to PHP 7.2. My site went offline after the upgrade and I had to go back to PHP 5.6. I contacted tech support for hosting provider and they had to manually update some scripts in the background on their side.

According to them (hosting service), upgrading to anything above PHP 7.1 is a pain and they had to manually edit few scripts to make older WordPress installations work for their customers.

Hi, thanks for your reply. No, they have just upgraded me to the best server I can afford. Still the same issues though.

They have been helpful and looked at everything?

Did your host say which scripts needed updating?

Do you have a link to share?
