Site output broken by PHP Fatal error, wpa_contactform7.php, php5

    Update to plugin version 2.1.18 on WordPress?4.7.28, php 5.4.16 leads to

    AH01071: Got error 'PHP message: PHP Fatal error: Can't use method return value in write context in /var/www/<redacted>/httpdocs/wp-content/plugins/honeypot/includes/integration/wpa_contactform7.php on line 6\n', referer: <redacted>

    and site output is broken (while /wp-admin is OK).

    Site up again with rollback to plugin v2.1.5 (before “Fix Contact Form 7 issue when validation error occurs” in 2.1.6).

    I don′t expect the plugin to be compatible with php5 (and yes, I know it′s risky), but am interested in plugin updates which improve spam detection.

    May be this issue should at least lead to a tagging of the plugin regard php version compatibility.

    I am so sorry but we don’t have support for version older than 5.4. It does not support directly using a function or method return value in a write context. And we need this for our function to work.

    Therefore, if you’re encountering this error, you should consider upgrading your PHP version to at least PHP 5.5 or later. But going for version 8.0 and above is better. As below those versions are already marked End of Life.
