• We have a college WordPress multisite installation with a main site and 3 subdomains, each of which has between 2 and 10 subsites (sub directories). For one of the subsites we are experiencing intermittent but persistent problems with users getting “site not found – server unable to connect” error messages. Sometimes user A can connect without problem but user B at the same time can’t connect. The affected site is small (about 10 pages) and uses 9 plugins, all but 2 of which (a bootstrap carousel and simply instagram) are also in use on the primary site.
The error log generated by the hosting service contains nothing relevant.
I have run a number of google searches but found nothing relevant – everything seems to be about what to do if there’s a problem setting up the network or site initially. Any suggestions gratefully appreciated.

Server unable to connect is … pretty wild.

You’re using a multi-network plugin for this? And the error only happens on ONE subdomain?

We use the Networks for WordPress plugin. We also have WordPress MU Domain Mapping, but this subdomain is not mapped.

Unfortunately it’s hard to know if this is only happening on one subdomain. Most of the subdomains have very sporadic traffic, and the issue is clearly erratic. In at least one instance, of 3 people sitting in the same office at the same time, 1 could access the subdomain and 2 couldn’t. I have never been able to reproduce the problem. I’ve checked from both on and off our local network, in case that was a factor. I know the reports are legitimate – I’ve talked to tech support at our hosting service twice, and the first call the tech support guy got the error!

The only time I saw it recently was when the tables wp_sitemeta were actually missing.

But it happens on myriad sites and not just one?

Does your server have any sort of security blocking like a firewall?
