• I attempted to update to the newest wordpress version and the browser crashed and now my site is not accessible at all.

I’ve done searches and tried to manually update the files and just continually get “
The website encountered an error while retrieving https://www.databridgemarketing.com/wordpress/wp-admin/setup-config.php. It may be down for maintenance or configured incorrectly.
    Error code: 500″.

I’ve removed all the files except for wp-content via ftp and then uploaded those folders from the manual download of 3.6.1 and still have no luck.

There was no issue with the site prior to attempting the update.

Any help that anyone could give me would be GREATLY appreciated.

    Jay

  • Try:
    – switching to the default theme by renaming your current theme’s folder inside wp-content/themes and adding “-old” to the end of the folder name using FTP or whatever file management application your host provides.

resetting the plugins folder by FTP or phpMyAdmin.

    – re-uploading all files & folders – except the wp-content folder and the wp-config.php & root .htaccess files – from a fresh download of WordPress. Make sure that you delete the old copies of files & folder before uploading the new ones.

    – running the upgrade manually via wp-admin/upgrade.php

Thanks esmi….Followed those directions and still had issues with the new version.

I deleted everything except wp-content then copied over all the files and folders from a backup I had and now i can login but when i try and just go to the site it tells me “You don’t have permission to access / on this server.”

Should I attempt the update to 3.6.1 again?

Did you delete your wp-config.php and root .htaccess files?

I did delete them originally but put them back up from my local backup.

bad move? maybe I’m putting them in the wrong place?

I don’t think you uploaded all of the WordPress core files & folders. Try again.

Yes you were correct. I missed the index.php file and others within that directory.

The site is now at least back up but not sure if I should try the update again.

When I did it earlier I hadn’t updated the plugins. Would out of date plugins cause an error like that? I’ve since updated the plugins.

    Yes. Ideally you should:

    1. deactivate all plugins
    2. switch to the default theme
    3. backup your database
    4. finally run the WP upgrade

Thank you so much for your help. I really and truly appreciate it.

You know I did the steps you outlined to update and when it gets to the point where it is updating the database it stops and the site is not accessible again.

Is there a problem possibly with the mySQL database on the server?

I’ve restored again back to 3.4.

    Any thoughts?
