• After updating some plugins, I received a “database error” message and could not access my site, I was advised to change the Plug in folder name in FTP, i did this and the site came back (with no plug ins) I as then advised to download the plug in folder, delete the plug ins on the server and re-introduce them one by one. Now however, my website is no accepting any plugins at all. In FTP it all seems to be uploading fine and is displaying there, just not on my dashboard. If i try to add plug ins from my dashboard I just get an error saying that WordPress could not create the database. I have been backing my site up but after unzipping the folder I realised that they were in MYSQL format-this is something I have never used so it seems the back p is useless and my web hosts do not have one. I have no idea what to do.

    Any advice? please?

I still do not have plugins and when i try to download them, I just get this
    Unpacking the package…

    Installing the plugin…

    Could not create directory. /home/sites/tbdowenholland.com/public_html/wp-content/plugins/contact-form-7/

    Plugin install failed

OK that’s a file permission problem. Your web server cannot write to the plugins directory to install plugins.

FTP to your site and check the permissions on

    • public_html/
    • wp-content/
    • wp-content/plugins/

If only your user account can write to them, therein lies the problem.

(Which actually isn’t a problem, it’s brilliant for security and is how ALL my sites exist, but it’s not for everyone) ??

Okay, my web hosts looked into this yesterday.

The permissions are that group and public can both read and execute, owner can read, write and execute. When i try to change it so that all can write, it allows me to tick the box, but will not save the setting.

You don’t want blanket write access, that’s dangerous. What’s your site URL?

I’ve tried a few different file permissions and nothing has changed. ??
