Site Migration from Sub Domain to Root Domain

  • I had a development website setup at dev.wfmucw.org whilst the original site was at https://www.wfmucw.org.

    Today is the crossover day where the old site has been deleted and the development site made live.

    The site is hosted at DreamHost.

    I renamed the original wfmucw.org hosted domain to old.wfmucw.org and then renamed the dev.wfmucw.org hosted domain to wfmucw.org using FTP.

    Using MySQL all references to dev.wfmucw.org were changed to wfmucw.org

    I can now not view the site.

    Firefox says “The page isn’t redirecting properly. Firefox has detected that the server is redirecting the request for this address in a way that will never complete.”

    I urgently need support in resolving this issue as currently NO content is visible!

  • I’m semi new to wp but to offer a couple things. I just recently moved a site from one server to another and had to change a few things.

    1. As you did, change all references to the url in the db
    2. Check permalinks and urls on your pages and menu items to ensure nothing there is still referencing the dev url.
    3. check htaccess file if you are using one as it will be different.

    Luckily that worked for me once I got everything changed. I missed a couple url changes in the db my first time through.
