I have Smart Slider 3 (free) installed. Site works nicely in development. Currently I do not have any sliders defined, but if I deactivate SS3 then the site breaks and I can not log in anymore. White screen of death. I already tried uninstalling SS3, a process that which broke and couldn’t complete. That didn’t work and I had to install it again through ftp and drop the database and import a backup.

I’m totally confused, because SS3 worked, but I wanted to deactivate it to debug another plugin (Envira Pro) and then all fell apart.

    Any pointers?

The page I need help with: [log in to see the link]

    Hi @knudjahnke

If Smart Slider 3 is disabled in your plugins list, then we won’t run any codes that could cause any problems for your site. The only problem that you might see is that, instead of sliders your site would display shortcodes.

So if your site crashes with a PHP error while Smart Slider 3 is disabled, then the problem is most likely that you have a third party plugin or a theme, that tries to use the PHP codes of Smart Slider 3, however they don’t have a dependency check, so they try to run those codes even if Smart Slider 3 is disabled.

With a plugin/theme conflict test you could figure this out:

so what you should do is the following:

    • disable all plugins except Smart Slider 3 and change your theme to a WordPress default one like Twenty Twenty-One.
    • once it is done, disable Smart Slider 3 as well and check if the problem still occurs.
    • If the problem no longer occurs, leave Smart Slider 3 disabled, and start enabling your other plugins one by one or in small groups. Once the error starts occuring again, you managed to find the plugin that tries to use our codes.

Another tip: If you enable the error reporting on your site:

then you disable Smart Slider 3 in your plugins list ( so the error occurs ), that should generate an error log and it should point on the file where the error occurs. This could also help you in finding the cause of the problem.

Once you managed to find the plugin/theme that causes the problem, you should ask its developers to run their code integrations only if our plugin is actually enabled.

    Best regards,
    Laszlo.

Thank you, @laszloszalvak, will try! It must be something along that line, bc it still happened when I removed the 2 instances where I use the slider. I have a suspicion (another graphics-intense plugin that also has issues), but there is no incompatibility warning so far. I’ll post the solution if I find it.
