• I’ve been trying to put together a site and have started encountering issues with deleted pages loading and old versions of forms showing with fields I deleted. I deactivated all plugins and changed themes but the site cycles through the inactive themes and some parts behave as if the plugins are still active. I’ve tried clearing cache on my browser and in WordPress and it’s not helped. Does anyone please have any ideas what could be causing this? Or how to fix it?

Thanks for the reply! So I need to wipe the site and restart?

Since it sounds like you’re still at an early stage with the site, wiping and starting over might make sense.

What you describe sounds so much like a caching problem. Perhaps your hosting has its own cache? Here’s an article about that. You can check to see if your host is in the table of contents there. I also recommend asking your host directly or checking their support site.

Thanks, clearing caches on server and wiping and starting over haven’t helped sadly, I’m still having these issues. Any changes I make to the site are not consistent – the site cycles through the changes I’ve made. Eg. If I change themes, the site alternates between the two themes, if I update some content on a page the page alternates between the old and the new content. It’s the same across Edge, Chrome, Firefox, and on my smartphone, I asked a family member to try on their computer and it’s still the same.

    Things I’ve tried:

Clearing my browser data & cache
    Purging cache on server
Disabling cache on server and enabling ‘development mode’
Installing a cache plugin on WordPress and clearing data & cache
    Resetting my router
    Wiping site data

After a day or two of not making any changes to my site the issue resolves, the site eventually seems to ‘forget’ the previous changes and stops loading the old themes and content. But as soon as I start making changes it starts cycling through them and no amount of cache clearing actually seems to do anything at all. It wouldn’t be so bad if it just took the site a while to update new content, but the cycling makes it virtually unusable. It does seem like a caching issue, but where is it coming from? I’d be really grateful for any suggestions?

Oh my goodness. I’m not sure if I’m happy to read this thread or not!

I’m having exactly the same issues, and glad to know I’m not going mad. You’ve described all the things I’ve tried too. I haven’t started from scratch though – there’s just too much content.

Did you manage to get to the bottom of it?

Hi Cadiz yes I got to the bottom of it, in my case it was the cache with my host at StackCP causing the problem. I don’t know why, but it was cycling through all changes I made to the site over the last day or so, which is how long it keeps cached data for I think before automatically clearing it. No amount of manual cache clearing did anything, and neither did enabling ‘development mode’. I had to disable caching on StackCP completely to fix the issues, and installed the plugin W3 Total Cache as a replacement.

I also discovered whilst researching the problem that similar issues can be caused by Chrome: https://stackoverflow.com/questions/26111389/chrome-keeps-loading-a-old-cache-of-my-website
