I began using the Site Kit plugin several weeks ago, and I began noticing recently, in the Site Kit Summary showing top content over the last 28 days, the page title with the most views is: (not set)

This links ultimately to my site’s home page, which appears next in the list (with its correct title), and which had previously been first in the list, prior to (not set) appearing.

In other words, my site’s home page appears twice in the Site Kit Summary of top content over the last 28 days: first as (not set) and second as its correct title.

Is this a problem and, if so, how would I fix it?

    Thank you.

  • @mikeharrison Thank you for posting your topic. I’m happy to investigate this further, but could you please share a few additional details?

    1) Could you share your site URL and your Site Health info here through this form.

    2) Does this issue occur in an incognito window?

    3) Have you recently changed your homepage title or homepage display?

    4) Are you using any language plugin or any other plugin that provides variations of the homepage?

    Thank you, Luckyna:

    1. Submitted
    2. What I reported is not seen in a browser window; only in my WordPress dashboard.
    3. Homepage title has not been recently changed. I do not know what you mean by
    “homepage display.”
    4. No such plugins are used.

@mikeharrison Thanks for sharing the information. To clarify, did you modify what page the homepage links to in Settings > Reading > Reading Settings > Your homepage displays: Homepage dropdown field like in the screenshot example?

The incognito window check was to rule out if any caching could be involved. In some cases using the browser’s cache clearing may not update the data since the request is saved in the sessions storage of your browser. The easiest way to clear sessions storage is to open an incognito/ private browser and log into your WordPress Admin from there.

Have you attempted to disconnect the Analytics module only (Site Kit > Settings > Analytics > Edit > Disconnect Analytics from Site Kit) then reconnecting it under Connect More Services in the settings (in an incognito window)?

I’ll continue to investigate and share any updates as soon as I have more information.

    Thanks, Luckyna,

I have not changed what the homepage displays since originally setting it as a static page and to the correct page title.

Also, I tried the cache clearing method you suggested, as well as disconnecting and reconnecting the Analytics module, but they did not have any effect.

However, if the Site Kit data I provided shows you everything I see in my dashboard, note the large spike in page views on March 23, which immediately returned to normal the following day. I’m wondering if that is related to the (not set) page title.

    Thank you for your help!

@mikeharrison Thanks for the update. The Site Health data you submitted informs us of your WordPress configuration such as what plugins/themes activated, and what modules are connected within Site Kit. Site Kit is dynamically pulling in this information from the Analytics services, but this does not get reflected when submitting the Site Health info.

    1) If possible, can you please share a screenshot of the most popular content screen? You can use services like JumpShare or Imgur to capture and share.

    2) From your Google Analytics account, navigate to Behavior >> Site Content >> All Pages and switch the primary dimension to “Page Title” (see example). Do you see any (not set) values?

    (@mikeharrison)

    Thanks, Luckyna.

According to Site Kit, my site’s most popular page is the home page, which (not set) is linked to. All of the home page content cannot be captured in a single screenshot because scrolling is necessary to see it all. Would a link to the home page be helpful to you, or is there another way to capture and share a screenshot?

As for your second question, there are no (not set) values shown.

I was interested to see the section for most popular content in the Site Kit dashboard.

my site’s home page appears twice in the Site Kit Summary of top content over the last 28 days: first as (not set) and second as its correct title.

Does the (not set) link and the correct title link both direct to https://mike-harrison.com/ when you click on it?

Has this URL been modified recently?

Could you try to reset Site Kit (Site Kit > Settings > Admin Settings > Reset Site Kit) and connecting Analytics again?

Site Kit queries by both the title and URL and while I can’t be sure what is occurring in this case I’ll continue to investigate and follow up with any updates.

The most popular content in the Site Kit dashboard is:
    1: (not set)
    2: my home page title

Note: on the line directly below each of those two entries, the slash character (/) appears all by itself.

If I click on EITHER (not set) or my home page title, I am directed to a Site Kit page titled Detailed Page Stats, for my home page title.

However, if I instead click on the slash character below each of those things, I am directed to my home page.

My home page URL has not been modified recently; at least not since beginning to use the Site Kit plugin.

I will now try your suggestion to reset Site Kit and reconnecting Analytics.

    Thanks again, Luckyna.

    (@mikeharrison)

Site Kit has been reset and Analytics reconnected and configured, but nothing has changed.

Thanks for the update. We’ll keep you posted with any findings!

@mikeharrison Hi there, just want to share a quick update: I haven’t been able to reproduce the exact issue you are seeing with (not set) being the same link as your homepage and displaying in most popular content. Note that we’ll continue to look into it and are investigating similar scenarios where there may be duplicate URLs appearing twice.

    Thread Starter MikeHarrison

    (@mikeharrison)

    Thanks, Luckyna.

I don’t remember if I shared this earlier but, unlike the stats for actual pages, the page views for the (not set) entry have not changed since I first noticed this issue. And I wonder if this is in any way related to an event on March 23 (last week) when the number of site visitors suddenly spiked. According to Google Analytics, at 8:00 am that day, the number of visitors jumped, then returned to “normal.” There were 327 users (all new) and 361 sessions (of about 9 seconds each), totaling 721 page views.

If that is related to the (not set) entry, then perhaps the entry will clear once 28 days have passed.

Maybe that information will be helpful to you.

    Thanks again.

@mikeharrison Thanks for sharing. Is that entry visible if you change the view to the last 7 days?

    Thread Starter MikeHarrison

    (@mikeharrison)

With still barely any experience with Google Analytics or Site Kit, I never thought to change the view but, no, the (not set) entry is not visible when viewing the past seven days.

@mikeharrison Thanks, that is very helpful information! I appreciate your patience while we gather more details and continue to look into possible causes.

    – Does the same occur when viewing the last 14 days?

My home page URL has not been modified recently; at least not since beginning to use the Site Kit plugin.

    – Do you recall if you had moved to https at some stage or migrated your site from staging to live? Were you previously using a staging URL and you have now changed your site to the live domain of https://mike-harrison.com/ ?

    – Are there duplicate URLs when you click on the “Source: Analytics” link?

We will consult with the team and follow up with any updates.
