    Please help – my site (swimquest.uk.com) is due to be made public very shortly and it is extremely slow. I have tried installing W3 Cache but despite turning all the options on and off it doesn’t make a difference. Have also reduced size of all images to 800x600px. Can anyone suggest anything else I can do to speed up the site?
    I have also spoken to my host (names.co.uk) who assure me there is nothing they can do from their side.
    I am at a complete loss!

    Any advice appreciated
    Alice

  • Hi Alice, here’s a recent post in Smashing Magazine with some suggestions on speeding up a WordPress site:

    https://www.smashingmagazine.com/2014/06/25/how-to-speed-up-your-wordpress-website/

    I have also spoken to my host (names.co.uk) who assure me there is nothing they can do from their side.

    Well, that’s not exactly true. ?? Sometimes speed issues are indeed host-related, but it can take some time and detective work to determine the cause.

    Since your site’s loading speed isn’t a theme-specific issue related to Pictorico, you might also want to post in the general troubleshooting forum, where more people will see it:

    Good luck!

    Wow – so installing the plugin P3 helped me figure out that Jetpack and Nexgen gallery were taking up nearly 40% of my site load time.
    I liked Jetpack, but not that much, so I’ve removed it. Nexgen gallery is a bit more of a loss, as I’m now going through and reinserting all of the images through the general wordpress media / gallery option.

    My only problem is that now may gallery pages are clicking through to these individual pages:

    https://swimquest.uk.com/formentera-spain-improvers-815/photo-3-2/

    Could you suggest some CSS which would get rid of absolutely everything on this page apart from the image, and the ‘Previous image’ and ‘next image’ option? That would be fabulous.

    Thanks again for your help. I’m learning a lot!

    I looked at the gallery here but it looks like the images link to each jpg image file:

    You can always try just activating the specific Jetpack modules that you need. If you need help, the Jetpack staff is very helpful:

    By using a browser inspector (I like Firebug in Firefox but Chrome has a good built-in one too) I found three elements you could try hiding:

    .site-header, .comments-area, .widget-areas {
    display: none;
    }

    Thank you again for being so helpful. I actually found quite a good photo gallery (or so it seems so far) that is faster than NexGen and seems to do the trick, solving my issue of needing to scroll through the images. I’m using Envira, which seems to have helped with the speed a little so far. If anyone is interested it is:

    Hello Alice,
    Not sure if your issues are resolved, but you may wish to optimize your images (if you haven’t already done so…) this too may help with your speed issues.

    I have heard good things about wp smush.it

    once installed it will work on any image you load into the media library with nothing for you to do differently, and there is an option to “clean up those images” that already reside on your site.

    I hope you are running quickly in no time.

    Looking forward
    Kristen

    Hi Kristen
    I have used Smush it and I think it is making some difference – however, Google PageSpeed insights tells me I still need to optimise my images. I have no idea how to compress and resize, and equally, I’m not sure how to find the images it is advising me to compress and resize! Any clues appreciated!

    Google advises the below for example:

    Compressing and resizing https://swimquest.uk.com/…2014/06/lago-dorta-hp-590×590.jpg?b41319 could save 73.9KiB (88% reduction).

    But I’m not sure how to do this! Please help …

    Hello Alice,
    I am happy that Smush it is helping a bit…sorry it didnt fix it all.

    First – do you have photoshop? If yes, drop your images in and under the images tab – check the size, should be in pixels and not outrageous numbers…also, resolution for web is standard 72.

    Also, when you save in photoshop, you can choose just a bit underneath the standard save under FILE – to save for web and devices, and this helps as well.

    Also, it is possible that your plugins are also weighing you site down. A good practice when troubleshooting is to do a little project. deactivate all your plugins, and add them back one at a time, while checking your load time in between. you can then sometimes find what is contributing the heavy load.

    I was at a meeting of developers last night and we were talking about this very issue, and a plugin that made everyone light up was called Regenerate Thumbnails. I will say i have never used it, but other have to fantastic success.

    I hope this was helpful. if you do not have photoshop, let me know and I will seek another solution.

    moving forward,
    Kristen

    In reading your initial post again, your images may still be too large, as not all images need to be at 600×800.

    and my above post did not include the link to

    https://www.wpbeginner.com/plugins/regenerate-thumbnails-new-image-sizes-wordpress/

    I hope there is an improvement, as I can’t imagine your frustration at a very exciting time, with your site soon to launch.

    Good luck for smooth waters.

    moving forward,
    Kristen
