When was site built – approx 4 years ago
Any issues before yesterday – no
What caused issue – not 100% sure, i updated about 10 plugins and upgraded site to 3.3.1. Immediately there after it seems my CSS has died, all my images and custom header has been overwritten or deleted, and all my links are erroring.

Any help would be MUCH appreciated. Thanks guys!
    Mike

  • Have you tried:

    – deactivating all plugins to see if this resolves the problem. If this works, re-activate the plugins one by one until you find the problematic plugin(s).

    – switching to the Twenty Eleven theme to rule out any theme-specific problems.

resetting the plugins folder by FTP or PhpMyAdmin. Sometimes, an apparently inactive plugin can still cause problems.

    – re-uploading the wp-admin and wp-includes folders from a fresh download of WordPress.

esmi, thanks for the quick reply.

    – deactivate all plugins, yes i did this previously, did not help.
    – switching to TwentyEleven theme, yes did this as well. Site is a bit more normal, however all links still 500 error.
    – resetting the plugins folder (did this, didnt fix 500 errors in either theme (my site has been on simpleX 2.0.1.1 for years now, and that is where all my customization work has been done)
    – re-uploading wp-admin and wp-includes, did that, no change.

+ idea: might this have something to do with child and parent themes, where updates dont screw up my whole site? I had to something similar with another site i run https://HoneyTrek.com also on wordpress, but that is through Platform Pro, i didnt think i needed to do that with normal wordpress install. thoughts there?

    any other ideas?

Your site is currently using the Classic WordPress theme and appears to be working just fine.

are you able to click on a post? i get a “500 internal server error” when i click on the rent our apartment one for example

https://seeingdesign.com/etc/want-our-apartment is where that link takes me.

second part of my reply, i am trying to get back to the look my site had two days ago before WP screwed up my site (or maybe it was my fault, either way i never saw any warning messages, and i did back up before i upgraded, so i can show you what it used to look like before 3.3.1 came along)

Try resetting your custom permalinks back to the default setting via Settings -> Permalinks. If this works, then review Using_Permalinks before setting a custom permalink structure back up again.

worked, thanks so much ESMI. i still lost all the custom work i did on the blog to date, do you know how i can restore that stuff (from a full back up i have from a few weeks ago) without messing up the 3.3.1 upgrade, etc?

Did you customise the Twenty Eleven or Twenty Ten themes? If so, you shouldn’t. Twenty Eleven is the default WordPress theme and having access to an unedited version of the theme is vital when dealing with a range of site issues. Plus, as you may have discovered, all of your changes will be lost when you update WordPress and/or the themes. Create a child theme for your changes.

nah didnt mod those two. modified “simplex” theme. didnt use child though. guess i will need to learn how to do that next. thanks again.
