    I installed this on a very simple site using the TwentyTen theme (everything was fully up-to-date) and when I clicked and saved Prevent Access to WP Default Install Files under Filesystem Security I immediately got a blank white screen with:
    Parse error: syntax error, unexpected '<' in /home4/pbbell/public_html/wp-config.php on line 4
    I went to that file and the only thing on line 4 is:
    <?php

    I have no idea what do next.

    How do I fix this? What went wrong?

    It seems the <?phpcode that was added was the whole problem. Removed that and the site was back up, though I still had one other less devastating error to fix afterwards.
