• A site I made completely vanished today. Long story short, I built the site for a friend, he had it hosted on his hosting account (One Web Hosting). They are terrible (site was always down), so I said I could put it on my account. The nameservers where changed yesterday. Today I added the domain to my cpanel.

    Site worked fine today.

When I was in the wordpress dashboard, I updated 4 plugins. Once they updated, there were 2 errors from the one plugin, wp security. That plugin always shows an error message, so I didn’t pay much attention to it.

Anyway, a few minutes later, I went to the site and all I got was an index of / page with the only file being the cgi-bin. Going to the domain/wp-admin would give a 500 internal server error.

Went into an FTP program and that’s when it dawned on me, that is the ONLY file. Everything else is gone. Literally, everything.

And no, I don’t have a backup. Dumb, I know.

If I go to the domain now, sometimes it shows the screen I mentioned above and sometimes it shows the homepage BUT with no formatting…as if there is no theme selected. Not sure how it sometimes shows content and sometimes doesn’t.

Am I screwed? Seems apparent I am since there are no files, but again, why does it show some content?

Any input is appreciated…even if it’s to confirm that I’m out of luck.

  • Have you contacted your hosts? sounds like something went badly wrong on their server and, with luck, they will have a backup.

I just emailed them. Not sure if they will since it was just added to my account.

I’m going to see if his old host has any backups.
