What you need to do is start messing around with the wp-layout.css file. That is the file which controls the look of the site.
Make a backup first- then just start changing things around. If you aren’t too familiar with CSS check out some tutorials like at the https://www.w3schools.com
If you have dreamweaver or something like it with a CSS editor built in it can make things a little easier to see how they are laid out.
Once you get more familiar with CSS you will get some ideas and start obsessively tweaking it like me!

I’ve noticed there are a few downloads here … when I download, what do I have to open it up with?

If you use windows, the built in unzipper should do it – just double-click the file.

yeah, but then a screan pops up asking me what I’d like to open it with.

Open them the same way you extracted the wordpress package
