    Hi,

I use SST/TaxCloud on a client site. Looks like, since July 1, many of our service-category woocommerce items were charging sales tax for customers when it should’t. Previously we’ve had the ‘store default’ TIC inside TaxCloud account set to 91000 (general services). However, it looks like this wasn’t being used on my products where I had the product TIC setting at set to ‘site default’ (which previously tied into that TaxCloud internal default setting).

Once I went ahead and set the TIC to 91000 setting on a product by product level, it looks like these service products stopped collecting taxes on checkout.

However, it’d be great to be able to utilize the ‘site default’ setting again, or at least understand what happened here.

Thanks for any insights on this issue!

    Hi,

Sorry to hear about this issue.

Is it possible that you had a TIC set at the category level for the categories the affected products are assigned to? If so then I’m guessing what happened was that the category default TIC was being applied when no TIC was assigned at the product level instead of the default TIC set in your TaxCloud account. In that case I think I’ll need to make some adjustments to the UI to avoid confusion around that moving forward.

    Best regards,
    Brett

    Hey Brett,

I didn’t have a TIC set at the category level – this is set to “using site default”, just as the individual products were before; nothing has been selected on the term editing screen.

Any other thoughts about what might have happened here? It really did seem to kick in right at the turn of the month, which made me think it would be something new in TaxCloud account that maybe they didn’t make you privvy enough to? But if I’m the only one this happened too, maybe that’s a bad guess.

    Thanks,

    Steve

    Hi Steve,

I did some testing this morning and it appears this is likely a problem on the TaxCloud side. Specifically it looks like their system no longer applies the correct tax rate when it infers the TIC from the default assigned for the store in the TaxCloud account.

For example, here’s a screenshot of an order where I explicitly set the item’s TIC to 31110 in the API request: https://drive.google.com/file/d/1EZIkJEvxeywZYEhhkLjQnY6NDbDM3caJ/view?usp=sharing. This TIC is expected to be tax exempt in my case and as you can see TaxCloud did calculate the tax as $0.00.

Here’s a screenshot of another transaction where I omitted the TIC in the API request and let TaxCloud assume it from the store settings: https://drive.google.com/file/d/1iFozJlkwbTpibv80faK6ev-12fufjurT/view?usp=sharing. In this case tax was applied even though the UI shows the same TIC for the item and all other aspects of the order were identical.

I’m not a TaxCloud insider so I can’t do anything directly to help with this, but I’d encourage you to reach out to their support team with this issue so they can follow up.

    Best regards,
    Brett
