• Every time I get a pingback from somebody at my independently hosted, WordPress-based site, the site suddenly becomes unavailable. Every page returns the following message in the browser window:

The e-mail could not be sent.
Possible reason: your host may have disabled the mail() function…

Now I’ll have to have my host re-install a backup. The support tech insists this is a problem with WordPress and not with their server.

I know I haven’t upgraded to 2.3.2. Could that be the problem?

OK, I’ve upgraded to 2.3.2 and shut off Subscribe to Comments and Relish Comments plugins. Any other suggestions?

    Hello? Is this mike on?

So either you downloaded a special “just for you” version of WP that has this problem (as no one else seems to be suffering from it) or else the support tech is wrong and there is actually a compatibility issue with the server set-up. Something that is backed up by the error message itself..

Possible reason: your host may have disabled the mail() function…

Did they specifically state that this function is enabled and working on the server? If not that is the first thing to check.
Second, do you have any other plugins installed (even non-email related ones). If so just disable them for a short while and test the problem, just in order to eliminate suspects from your enquiry.
Might also help if you say who your host is. Someone out there may have encounter this problem with them and no a solution.

    My host is Hostito.

Since upgrading and deactivating the plug-ins mentioned above, I’ve received a pingback or two and not had a problem. I guess this deserves further investigation, but I’m happy for the moment in not crashing every time somebody links to me. Maybe I’ll take it up with Hostito after the weekend.

    Thanks, obscure, for your input.

OK don’t just leave them all deactivated. Reactivate one plugin and then see if the problem occurs. If odd reactivate another one and repeat until you find the one that is causing the problem. Then go to the homepage for that plugin and see if anyone else is reporting a similar problem. May be a fix available.
